This is the question to settle before you buy, because cozy co-op splits into three very different setups. Some games are local on one screen and one console, so a single copy covers you both — you just need a second controller. Some are online only: that means two copies, two devices, and on console a paid online subscription as well, which on Switch is Nintendo Switch Online. A few do both. Hello Kitty Island Adventure on Switch, for example, is online only and needs Nintendo Switch Online, while Stardew Valley offers local split-screen for two on one console and Overcooked! 2 covers both — up to four players on one console, or online with the same subscription requirement. Always check the store page for the specific modes before you buy two copies.
Two things matter more than the genre. First, the game should let two people play at different intensities. If one of you wants to min-max the layout while the other just wants to water plants and wander, a good co-op game absorbs both without either feeling like they are holding the other back. Drop-in, drop-out co-op helps a lot here, as does a shared world you can both potter around in rather than a single track you have to clear together. Second, watch for shared fail states. A game where one player's mistake ends the round for both of you raises the temperature fast, which is great if you both enjoy that and rough if you do not. The cooking-and-service games are built around exactly that pressure, and plenty of couples love them for it. Farming, decorating and building games almost never put you in that spot. Worth checking before you buy: whether the co-op is local, online, or both, and whether online needs a subscription on your platform. Store pages list this, and it varies by version even for the same game.
Often not, and it is the most common way cozy co-op plans fall apart. Cross-play is decided game by game, and plenty of cozy multiplayer titles only match you with players on the same platform — so a Switch copy and a Steam copy of the same game may never see each other online. Some games add cross-play later, or support it only in a particular edition, so a "multiplayer" badge on a store page tells you nothing about whether it works across your two machines. Before either of you buys, check the game's own store page or the developer's site for cross-play. If it is not supported, the usual fallback is playing on one console together — local and split-screen co-op work on a single machine and are not affected by cross-play at all.
