What is a nonogram?
A nonogram is a logic puzzle where numbers along the edges of a grid tell you how to fill it in, and a hidden picture appears when you get it right. A clue of 4 2 on one row means a run of four filled squares, then at least one gap, then a run of two. You work across rows and columns, cross-referencing until each square is provably filled or provably empty. A good nonogram is built so you can reason your way through it rather than guess — most of the time, the next move is one you can prove.
Are picross and nonogram the same thing?
Same puzzle, different name. Picross is short for picture crossword and it is a Nintendo trademark, which is why Nintendo's own series is called Picross while most other studios reach for another word — nonogram, griddler, cross, pic-a-pix, or something invented. The puzzle was popularised in Japan in the late 1980s, and the name nonogram comes from the artist Non Ishida, who co-invented it; a British puzzle collector, James Dalgety, built the word from her name plus "diagram" when he helped bring the puzzles abroad. That is why the names on this list look so scattered — Squeakross, Piczle Cross, CiniCross are all the same puzzle underneath. If one name turns up nothing you like, it is worth trying the others.
