91% Positive: How Well-Reviewed Cozy Games Really Are (2026 Data Study)

The average cozy game scores 91% positive on Steam — 95.1% when weighted by review volume — across 2.77 million player reviews, making cozy one of the best-reviewed corners of the store.

The average cozy game scores 91% positive on Steam — and when you weight that by how many people actually reviewed each game, it climbs to 95.1%, across 2.77 million player reviews. That makes cozy one of the best-reviewed corners of the entire store.

We pulled the ratings for every cozy game in our catalog that has a Steam score, and the pattern is almost lopsided in how positive it is. Of the 227 rated games, 167 (74%) score 90% positive or higher, and 123 clear the 95% "Overwhelmingly Positive" bar entirely. Only 12 land below 70%. For a genre often dismissed as slight or samey, cozy games are, statistically, some of the most loved games people buy.

The headline: cozy is a genuinely well-reviewed genre

Two averages tell the story, and the gap between them is the interesting part.

  • 91% — unweighted average (N = 227). Treat a tiny 40-review indie exactly the same as a million-review blockbuster, average their scores, and you land at 91% positive.
  • 95.1% — review-weighted average (N = 227, 2,775,019 total reviews). Now let each of those 2.77 million reviews count equally. The number jumps more than four points.

That jump is not noise. It means the most popular cozy games — the ones drawing hundreds of thousands of reviews — are also the most beloved. In plenty of genres, the hits are divisive and the weighted score sinks below the simple average. In cozy, it's the reverse: scale and love move together. The biggest cozy games didn't get big by being merely fine.

The distribution: 123 games are "Overwhelmingly Positive"

Averages hide shape, so here's the full breakdown. Every one of the 227 rated cozy games in our catalog, sorted into Steam's rating tiers:

Cozy games by Steam rating tier (N = 227)0255075100125Number of games123444351295%+Overwhelmingly Pos.90–95%Very Positive80–90%Positive70–80%Mostly PositiveUnder 70%Mixed / belowSteam positive-review percentage · CozyGames.io catalog · N = 227 rated games

The chart makes the shape obvious: the tallest bar, by far, is the 95%+ tier with 123 games — more than the next two buckets combined. Add the 44 games in the 90–95% band and you get 167 games (74%) sitting at 90% positive or better. The middle sags fast (43 games in 80–90%), the 70–80% band is nearly empty at just 5, and the entire "below 70%" region holds only 12 games out of 227.

In plain terms: if you pick a cozy game at random from our catalog, you have roughly a three-in-four chance it's rated 90%+ positive, and a better-than-even chance (54%) it's rated Overwhelmingly Positive. Very few genres can say that.

Why cozy reviews so well

A few forces stack up here, and they're worth naming because they explain the number rather than just celebrating it.

Expectations and delivery are aligned. Cozy games promise low stress, a gentle loop, and a warm world — and they tend to deliver exactly that. There's little of the hype-versus-reality whiplash that tanks scores in high-budget action or live-service releases. You buy calm, you get calm.

The audience is forgiving of scope, not of tone. A cozy game can be small and still earn a 97%. What players punish is a broken mood — grindy monetization, buggy launches, or stress smuggled into a game sold as relaxing. Most cozy developers understand their audience intimately, so the tonal misfires that sink other genres are rarer here.

Word-of-mouth self-selects buyers. Cozy discovery runs heavily through recommendation, curation, and lists like ours. People rarely buy a cozy game by accident, so the players leaving reviews are usually the players the game was made for — and happy buyers write kinder reviews.

That said, the 91% unweighted average is the honest one to quote when you care about typical quality, and 95.1% is the one to quote when you care about what most people are actually playing. Both are real; they answer different questions.

The takeaway

Cozy is not a soft genre with soft scores. It's one of the best-reviewed neighborhoods on Steam: 91% positive on average, 95.1% review-weighted, 74% of games at 90%+, and 123 titles rated Overwhelmingly Positive, all drawn from 2.77 million reviews across 227 rated games. If you've ever hesitated to try a cozy game because it looked "too small to be good," the data gently disagrees.

Methodology

Data pulled 2026-07-23 from the CozyGames.io database of 312 published cozy games, each identified as cozy from Steam tags and metadata, then scored and enriched with live Steam data. Price/rating/release-year fields are populated for ~71-73% of games (stated N per stat); figures describe games in our catalog, not a full Steam census. Prices are point-in-time USD list prices (not sale prices). Free to cite with attribution and a link to CozyGames.io.

The rating figures in this report cover the 227 games in our catalog with a Steam rating. Rating tiers follow Steam's own labels (Overwhelmingly Positive at 95%+, and so on). The 91% average is a simple mean of each game's positive-review percentage; the 95.1% figure re-weights that same set by each game's review count, totaling 2,775,019 reviews.
