The Cozy Games Price Index 2026: The Median Cozy Game Costs Just $5.99

The median cozy game costs $5.99 and the average is $10.06 — our data-driven price index of 223 cozy games shows the genre is far cheaper than most players assume.

The median cozy game costs $5.99. The average is $10.06. If you have ever hesitated to try a new cozy game because you assumed the genre had crept toward the $60–$70 price tags that dominate the rest of gaming, this is the number to remember: half of all cozy games cost less than a fancy coffee-and-pastry run.

We pulled list prices for 223 cozy games in the CozyGames.io database to build the first Cozy Games Price Index — because as far as we can tell, nobody has ever answered the simple question "how much does a cozy game actually cost?" Now we can. It is cheaper than you think.

The headline: $5.99 median, 65% under $10

Here is the shape of the whole thing, across the 223 priced games in our sample:

  • Median price: $5.99 — half of cozy games cost this much or less
  • Average price: $10.06 — pulled upward by a few premium titles
  • Cheapest: $0 (free) — Most expensive: $72
  • 65% cost under $10 (146 of 223 games)
  • 91% cost under $20 (203 of 223 games)
  • Only 3 games in the whole sample cost more than $30

That gap between the median ($5.99) and the average ($10.06) tells the real story. When the average is nearly double the median, it means the distribution is skewed: a big cluster of low-priced games sits at the bottom, and a thin tail of pricier titles stretches out the top. For a shopper, the median is the honest number. A typical cozy game costs about six dollars.

The price distribution, bucket by bucket

We sorted all 223 priced games into price brackets. The chart below shows how many games land in each one.

Cozy game count by price bucket (N=223)How Many Cozy Games Cost What (N=223)Number of games in each price bracket0204060801009Free93$0–544$5–1024$10–1533$15–2017$20–303$30+Price bracket (USD list price)Number of games

The single biggest bracket is $0–$5, with 93 of 223 games — more than four in ten cozy games are priced at five dollars or less. Add the 9 free games and the 44 games in the $5–$10 range, and you reach that 65% figure: 146 games under $10.

From there the counts thin out fast. The $10–$15 bracket holds 24 games, $15–$20 holds 33, and $20–$30 holds just 17. The premium end — anything over $30 — contains a grand total of 3 games out of 223. The genre simply does not do expensive very often.

Why cozy games stay cheap

A few things are happening in that distribution, and they say something real about the genre.

Cozy games are often small-team labors of love. A large share of the catalog comes from solo developers and tiny studios who price accessibly on purpose — the whole point of a cozy game is to be a low-friction comfort object, and a $4.99 price tag matches that promise. When your game is meant to be the thing you unwind with after a hard day, a low barrier to entry is part of the design.

The genre rewards frequent, low-commitment purchases. Because so many titles sit under ten dollars, cozy players tend to build libraries rather than agonize over a single big buy. That $5.99 median makes "just try it" an easy yes, which is a big part of why cozy games spread the way they do.

The premium tail is tiny but real. Those 3 games over $30 (and a top price of $72) are usually the marquee, feature-rich titles — the ones with years of updates, huge worlds, or console-flagship polish. They exist, and some are worth every penny, but they are the exception. When someone says "cozy games are getting expensive," they are almost always looking at that 1% tail and mistaking it for the whole shelf.

What this means for your wishlist

If you are building a cozy backlog, the data is reassuring: you can try a lot of the genre for very little. With a median of $5.99 and 91% of games under $20, a $50 budget could realistically get you eight to ten cozy games — sometimes more, once seasonal sales enter the picture (and remember, our figures are point-in-time list prices, not sale prices, so the real-world cost of building a library is often lower still).

A practical way to shop: start with the $0–$5 and free brackets, where nearly half the genre lives, and treat the $20+ shelf as an occasional splurge rather than the default. If you want somewhere to begin, our best cozy games lists are sorted by vibe and value, and if you would rather not spend anything at all, our free browser games let you sample the cozy feeling in a single click.

Methodology

Data pulled 2026-07-23 from the CozyGames.io database of 312 published cozy games, each identified as cozy from Steam tags and metadata, then scored and enriched with live Steam data. Price/rating/release-year fields are populated for ~71-73% of games (stated N per stat); figures describe games in our catalog, not a full Steam census. Prices are point-in-time USD list prices (not sale prices). Free to cite with attribution and a link to CozyGames.io.

For this report, price data was available for 223 games (the N behind every figure above). "Free" means a $0 list price. Buckets are inclusive of the lower bound and exclusive of the upper bound (e.g., "$5–10" includes $5.00 up to but not including $10.00), which is why the counts sum to 223.
