The State of Cozy Games 2026: Releases Peaked at 66 in 2024
Cozy game releases in our catalog climbed from 15 in 2020 to a peak of 66 in 2024 — here's the full year-by-year release trend.
Cozy game releases in our catalog climbed from 15 in 2020 to a peak of 66 in 2024 — more than a fourfold jump in four years. Put another way: nearly half of every dated cozy game we track (46%, or 103 of 225 games) arrived in just the last two years.
That is the headline of our second annual data report. The genre that was once a quiet corner of Steam — a handful of farming sims and decorating games — has become one of the fastest-growing spaces in indie gaming. And the numbers we track show exactly when that acceleration happened.
A quick but important note before the charts: everything below describes cozy games in the CozyGames.io catalog, grouped by their release year. This is not a census of every cozy game ever published on Steam. Our catalog covers the games we track, so these figures tell you about that slice of the genre — a meaningful, representative slice, but a slice all the same. We'd rather be precise than impressive.
Releases by year: the shape of a boom
Here is the release year for every dated game in our catalog, from 2015 through mid-2026 (N = 225 games with a known release year).
The curve tells a clean story. Through the mid-2010s the genre barely registered in our data — just 2 games each in 2015 and 2016, 3 in 2017. The first real stirrings came in 2018 (7) and 2019 (9). Then 2020 doubled that to 15, and the line never really looked back.
The steep climb runs 2021 to 2022 (19 to 32), holds roughly level through 2023 (31), and then explodes in 2024 to 66 games — the single biggest year in our catalog by a wide margin. 2025 settles back to 37, still the second-highest full year we track. (The 2 games shown for 2026 reflect a year still in progress at the time of this data pull, not a decline.)
Why "the last two years" matters so much
The most telling stat isn't any single year — it's how top-heavy the whole distribution is. Of the 225 games in our catalog with a known release year:
- 103 games (46%) were released in 2024 or 2025 combined.
- Only 23 games predate 2020 — a little over 10% of the dated catalog.
- The 2024 peak alone (66) is larger than everything from 2015 through 2020 put together.
That skew reflects two things at once. First, the genre genuinely accelerated: "cozy" went from a loose vibe to a headline Steam category, and more studios started shipping into it. Second, and just as honestly, catalogs like ours tend to fill in faster for recent releases — new games get discovered, tagged, and enriched while they're fresh. Both forces push the same direction. We name both so you can weigh the trend for what it is: a real boom, seen through a curator's lens.
What this means if you're just here to play
For players, the practical takeaway is cheerful: the cozy backlog has never been deeper, and most of it is new. If a game feels current, that's because it probably is — nearly half of what we track shipped in the last 24 months. Our best cozy games lists lean heavily on this recent wave, and if you'd rather not install anything, the play online collection is the fastest way to sample the genre in a browser.
For developers and press, the shape of this curve is the story: a genre that quietly compounded for half a decade, then found its moment in 2024.
The rest of the picture: price and ratings
Release year is only one dimension of the genre's health. In the two companion reports from this series, we looked at what cozy games cost and how players actually rate them:
- The Cozy Games Price Study — what the genre charges, and how many cozy games are genuinely cheap (or free).
- The Cozy Games Ratings Study — how highly players score cozy games, and whether the boom diluted quality.
Read together, the three reports sketch a full portrait of where cozy gaming stands in 2026.
Methodology
Data pulled 2026-07-23 from the CozyGames.io database of 312 published cozy games, each identified as cozy from Steam tags and metadata, then scored and enriched with live Steam data. Price/rating/release-year fields are populated for ~71-73% of games (stated N per stat); figures describe games in our catalog, not a full Steam census. Prices are point-in-time USD list prices (not sale prices). Free to cite with attribution and a link to CozyGames.io.
For this report specifically, the release-year analysis covers the 225 games in our catalog with a known release year (about 72% of the 312 published). The remaining games lacked a reliable release date at the time of the pull and are excluded from all year-by-year figures. Percentages (e.g., the 46% two-year share) are calculated against that 225-game base, not the full catalog.
